Built by John P. Stearns, the Wharf became the longest deep-water pier between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Built to serve the growing number of passenger and freight shipping needs of California’s South Coast, the Wharf expanded in 1877 when the railroad was introduced to Santa Barbara.
Over the years, Stearns Wharf has seen its fair share of hardship. An 1878 storm destroyed more than 1,000 feet of the Wharf, a spur created for the railway transport link was severely damaged after a number of storms and eventually abandoned in 1923. An earthquake in 1925 created serious damage, while a fire in 1973 perhaps did the most damage to the Wharf to date. After the fire, the wharf stayed closed for six years while undergoing renovations.
