The land on which the Santa Barbara Zoo is placed once belonged to a man named John Beale, where he built a glorious estate acres of manicured gardens that overlooked the Santa Barbara Channel. After his death, the estate was left to his widow Julia Child.
Ever the philanthropist, Child offered her property as a place for homeless pensioners and victims of the Depression to seek solace. As Child grew older she offered the estate to the Santa Barbara Foundation on instruction that it be used in a way that would benefit the community. After her death, the city decided to remove the aging house from the premises and use the land to create a public park. After a significant amount of planning and fundraising, the Santa Barbara Zoological Garden’s opened its doors in August 1963.
Today, the Santa Barbara Zoological Garden’s is located on 30 acres of beautifully well-maintained botanical gardens, and overlooks the Pacific Ocean, the Andree Clark Bird Refuge and the Santa Ynez Mountains. The zoo is home to 146 species for mammals, reptiles, birds and insects. Santa Barbara’s idyllic climate allows for over 500 animals to be housed in outdoor, natural habitats.
